Volunteers In Medicine San Diego: Board Trustee Position

Posted: 04/08/2024

Volunteers in Medicine San Diego is seeking a new Board Trustee for our El Cajon, CA, based, free medical clinic. We are a 501(c) nonprofit that provides healthcare for the uninsured in San Diego County with a dedicated staff and a loyal group of volunteers. VIM-SD offers free medical care to those who need it most and can do so because of our volunteers' generous donations, including medical providers, nurses, and support staff who dedicate their time, energy, and talents to care for our patients.

The members of the Board of Trustees of Volunteers in Medicine - San Diego (VIM) consist of a diverse group of people that reflects the community it serves—the maximum size of the board is 25 members. The board's roles and responsibilities can be broken down in three general categories: 50% fundraising, 25% strategic planning, 25% fiduciary oversight.

This role requires a commitment to volunteer some time each month towards board meetings, committee meetings, and fundraising events.

The following are recommendations for board membership:
Business Community: Corporate community members have countless "spheres of influence" that can help bring in needed financial resources to the clinic. Spheres of influence should include but not be limited to Legal, business management, public relations/marketing, medical/psycho-social, fund/business development, and human resources.

Community: A portion of the volunteer community that has tremendous potential to provide needed resources and talents to the clinic are those from the medical field, religious and community.
Responsibilities

  • Each Board member should serve as an ambassador for the VIM by actively supporting the clinic's mission.
  • All Board trustees must strive to attend at least 50% of the scheduled board meetings. Participation in a minimum of one event per year.
  • Each Board trustee must sign an annual Board of Trustees Agreement.
  • Actively participate in the Give/Get Policy. Each Board member should strive to "impact" the agency by a minimum of $1,000 annually through an annual personal contribution (of any size), and identify/solicit potential donors/sponsors.
  • Maintain ethical and moral standards.
  • Each Board trustee should serve on at least one committee and participate actively.
  • Develop an understanding of the programs and services provided by VIM.
